Unlike paperbacks and hard cover books, Kindle
eBooks do not require the insertion of page numbers.
Nevertheless a
content page may be created with suitable links to each chapter.
You may use the original paperback cover page less numbers.
Kindle formatting is not the same as book formatting. No need to change
fonts. All you have to do is convert the book
contents from your word processor into a PDF file. The front
cover image can be cropped from your original full cover image
into a JPEG (.jpg) file from the paperback. Then you are ready
to create your Kindle. For that purpose I use a free software
called Calibre. That software will combine your front cover
image with the book's content into an EPUB eBook ready for
uploading to KDP. It is important that all fonts are embedded in
your document in order for your contents to match what you
observe on your computer screen. I use WordPerfect 2021 (WP)
which automatically creates the PDF and embeds fonts.
CREATING LINKS in Kindle
First you must create a Table of Contents listing all your
chapter names without page numbers. You may add page numbers
later while formatting your paperback or hard cover book. In
WP select tools, highlight the chapter name on the contents
page and add the Bookmark. That can be the name of
the chapter to find. Then visit the chapter name in question
and create a bookmark of identical words. Both link and
bookmarks must be identical with no extra spaces. Go through
all your list of chapters using the same method. To test
these links, use the CTRL key with mouse clicked on the
link. If there is a fault check that both entries are
identical. Follow the same process in reverse by adding a
link of TOC(Table of contents) to all chapters, to return to
the Table of Contents. Then convert the book into PDF in WP
(File/Convert to PDF).Your front cover graphics should be in
JPEG (.jpg) format.
CREATING YOUR KINDLE
Downlooad and install the free program called Calibre from
their website. Open Calibre and add the book for conversion.
First, clear the book list in Calibre, if one exist. You
should only list the book in question. Then select 'Convert
Books', use EPUB then fill in the list. Finally select the
'OK' button at the bottom of the screen. Then save a copy by
choosing 'Save to Disk', 'Save to Disk in single folder'.
Now your Kindle book is ready for uploading to Amazon KDP.
It might be a good idea to check the kindle file in a free
software like Adobe Digital Editions 4.5, before uploading,
