Nevertheless, a navigable table of contents, complete with clickable links to each chapter, is a valuable addition. Your original paperback cover, minus any page numbering, can be repurposed for your Kindle edition.

   It's important to note that Kindle formatting differs from standard book formatting, though there's no need to alter your existing fonts. The initial step involves converting your book's content from your word processor into a PDF file. The front cover image can be cropped from your original full cover graphic into a JPEG (.jpg) file. Once these elements are prepared, you're ready to embark on creating your Kindle eBook.

For this purpose, I recommend a free software called Calibre. This ingenious tool will seamlessly combine your front cover image with your book's content, producing an EPUB eBook perfectly formatted for uploading to KDP. A crucial detail for maintaining the visual integrity of your content is to ensure all fonts are embedded within your document. This guarantees that what you see on your computer screen is precisely what readers will experience. I personally use WordPerfect 2021 (WP), which automatically generates PDFs and embeds fonts with ease.

  Creating Links in Kindle. Begin by crafting a Table of Contents that lists all your chapter titles, initially without page numbers. Page numbers can be added later when formatting your paperback or hardback versions. In WordPerfect, you'll select 'Tools', then highlight each chapter name on your Table of Contents page and add a 'Bookmark'. This bookmark can simply be the chapter's title. Next, navigate to the corresponding chapter within your book and create an identical bookmark. It's imperative that both the link and the bookmark are an exact match, with no extraneous spaces. Systematically work through all your chapters using this method.

To verify these links, hold down the 'CTRL' key and click on a link with your mouse. If you encounter any issues, double-check that both entries are identical. To enhance navigation further, reverse the process by adding a 'TOC' (Table of Contents) link to the beginning of each chapter, allowing readers to easily return to the Table of Contents. Once complete, convert your book into a PDF within WordPerfect (File/Convert to PDF). Remember, your front cover graphics should be in JPEG (.jpg) format.

To save a copy of your newly created Kindle eBook, select 'Save to Disk', then 'Save to Disk in single folder'. Your Kindle book is now ready for uploading to Amazon KDP. Before final submission, it's always a wise practice to preview your Kindle file using a free software like Adobe Digital Editions 4.5 to ensure everything appears as intended.
